Google wins bankruptcy auction for Spirit Airlines data assets

Google won a bankruptcy auction for de-identified commercial data, software code and operational records of defunct low-cost carrier Spirit Aviation Holdings Inc., paying $10 million, according to an August 14 filing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. The dataset includes 100 million emails, 500 million Microsoft Teams records, and pricing and transaction data; personal data such as 97.5 million passenger profiles and about 50.2 million Free Spirit loyalty records are excluded. Google said it plans to use the assets to further optimize its artificial intelligence technology.
