Investigation

The New York City Council announced on Oct 13 that SpaceXAI agreed to appear before the technology committee's AI safety hearing at 10 a.m. on Oct 16. The council had issued a subpoena to the company on Sept 28 requiring testimony; after SpaceXAI did not attend the Oct 5 hearing, the council told the company it would apply to the New York State Supreme Court for enforcement. SpaceXAI then requested a meeting on Oct 7 and confirmed participation in the follow-up hearing. Council members will question the company on data privacy, safety safeguards and whistleblower protection. Senior representatives of Anthropic, Google, Meta and OpenAI testified at last week's hearing.

Colossus generator and air-pollution controversy

Environmental advocates criticized xAI’s use of methane-powered portable generators at the Memphis Colossus site, arguing that the equipment created significant air pollution and operated without required permits. The dispute occurred in a region already facing serious smog and air-quality concerns. A county air permit was issued in July 2025.
