Plans for a public share offering were postponed, proposed restructuring finance proved difficult to obtain, and a possible takeover by Robert Maxwell's Hollis Brothers was abandoned. In April 1986, Sinclair Research sold its computer product range and the Sinclair brand name to Amstrad for £5 million. The transaction did not transfer the entire company. Sinclair Research survived as a smaller research, development and holding business, while Amstrad continued the computer line and marketed later Sinclair-branded machines. After the sale, Sinclair Research concentrated on inventions and technology ventures rather than mass-market computers. Associated or spun-off activities included Anamartic, Shaye Communications and Cambridge Computer. History
Sinclair Research developed from Clive Sinclair's earlier Cambridge electronics businesses. Sinclair Radionics, founded in 1961, produced radios, hi-fi equipment, calculators and scientific instruments. When governance and financial problems affected that company, Sinclair established successor structures. Westminster Mail Order was renamed Sinclair Instrument in 1975, and the business became Science of Cambridge in 1977. Early products included the Wrist Calculator, digital measuring equipment and the MK14 microcomputer kit. The decisive breakthrough came with the ZX80, designed around the Zilog Z80 processor and launched in 1980.
