    Eastern Sun financial-support controversy

The Singapore government stated that Eastern Sun, an English-language newspaper founded by Aw Kow, had received financial support from a Chinese intelligence service based in Hong Kong. Aw Kow resigned from his company positions, and Sin Poh (Star News) Amalgamated issued a statement denying any connection with Eastern Sun. The newspaper closed later that year. The controversy concerned a separate publication, although it affected the public context surrounding the Aw family's Singapore press interests.
