REALmagic MPEG-4 codec and Xvid GPL controversy

After Sigma Designs released its REALmagic MPEG-4 codec, testers and Xvid developers alleged that the product contained substantial Xvid code despite Xvid's GPL licensing requirements. Sigma acknowledged that a programmer had based the codec on Xvid and initially stated that the GPL material would be replaced. Xvid developers later reported that the replacement still appeared to contain rearranged or disguised Xvid code. Following public criticism, including coverage on technology news sites, Sigma agreed in August 2002 to publish the source code.
