SIG Group is a Swiss multinational packaging systems provider headquartered in Neuhausen am Rheinfall. The company develops and manufactures packaging materials, filling machinery, and associated services for liquid and semi-liquid foods and beverages. Its portfolio includes aseptic carton packs, bag-in-box formats, spouted pouches, and packaging systems designed for products such as milk, plant-based beverages, juices, soups, sauces, desserts, and other food products. After winning a Swiss government firearms contract in the late 1850s, it adopted the SIG name, derived from Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft. For much of its early history, SIG operated across railway equipment, firearms, and industrial machinery. Packaging machinery was added in 1906 to reduce dependence on cyclical railway and weapons businesses, and SIG began building its own machines in 1921. Early equipment served dry-food manufacturers, particularly confectionery producers. SIG entered aseptic liquid packaging through its 1989 acquisition of PKL in Germany. This business became the foundation of SIG Combibloc and shifted the group toward carton-based food and beverage systems. During the 2000s, SIG disposed of or reorganized several non-core activities while expanding its food and beverage packaging capabilities. Its industrial portfolio was progressively narrowed through transactions involving automation, dry-food packaging, beverage machinery, and railway and firearms operations. The railway business was sold in 1995, while the firearms division ultimately became separate from the present packaging group. Ownership changed substantially in the 2000s and 2010s. SIG Holding was acquired by Rank Group in 2007 and operated through Reynolds Group Holdings before being sold to Onex Corporation in 2015. The packaging company returned to the SIX Swiss Exchange in 2018. In 2020, SIG fully integrated SIG Combibloc Obeikan, a joint venture serving the Middle East and Africa. In 2022, the listed company changed its name from SIG Combibloc Group AG to SIG Group AG, acquired flexible-packaging specialist Scholle IPN, and acquired Pactiv Evergreen's Asia business for fresh-food packaging. Today, SIG presents itself as a systems-oriented and sustainability-focused packaging company. It manufactures aseptic packs with reduced or eliminated aluminum content in selected formats, promotes renewable and recyclable materials, and provides equipment operation and maintenance services. SIG Group began in 1853 as Schweizerische Waggonfabrik, a railway-car factory founded at Neuhausen am Rheinfall by Friedrich Peyer im Hof, Heinrich Moser, and Johann Conrad Neher. The location used power associated with the Rhine Falls and became the long-term industrial base of the enterprise. The company produced railway vehicles for Switzerland's developing rail network and received recognition at the 1855 Paris World's Fair. A Swiss government firearms contract in 1859 led the company to expand into weapons manufacturing and to change its name to Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft, abbreviated SIG. The firearms operation produced rifles and pistols that later became internationally known, including the SG 510, P210, and P220-related products. SIG also remained active in railway engineering, producing vehicles, bogies, and tram equipment. The railway division was sold to Fiat Ferroviaria in 1995. The firearms business was separated from the packaging-focused group around 2000 and is now outside the present SIG Group. Packaging machinery became a third major business in 1906. Initially, SIG manufactured equipment for folding cartons and dry foods, including machinery supplied to Swiss chocolate makers. In 1921, it began constructing its own packaging machines. The division expanded from confectionery and other dry products into broader packaging technology, with a continuous flow-wrapping machine introduced in 1956 and a new facility established at Beringen in 1964. The decisive transformation came in 1989, when SIG acquired PKL in Linnich, Germany. PKL gave SIG a position in aseptic carton packaging for liquid foods and beverages, later developed under the SIG Combibloc identity. During the 1990s and 2000s, SIG acquired and reorganized businesses across packaging, beverage machinery, plastics, and automation. It sold SIG Positec to Schneider Electric in 2000 and disposed of several food, beverage, and machinery activities during the following years. These transactions allowed management to concentrate progressively on food and beverage packaging. In 2007, SIG Holding was acquired by Rank Group and operated through Reynolds Group Holdings. Reynolds completed the sale of SIG to Onex Corporation in 2015. SIG subsequently returned to the public market through a 2018 listing on the SIX Swiss Exchange. The group strengthened its regional platform by fully integrating SIG Combibloc Obeikan in 2020; that joint venture had been established in 2001 and served customers in the Middle East and Africa from a manufacturing operation in Riyadh. The company expanded beyond traditional aseptic cartons in the 2020s. In 2022, it acquired Scholle IPN, adding bag-in-box and spouted-pouch technologies, and acquired Pactiv Evergreen's Asia fresh-products packaging business. That year it also changed its name from SIG Combibloc Group AG to SIG Group AG. The rebranding reflected a broader packaging systems strategy spanning cartons, flexible packaging, filling machines, digital services, and sustainability solutions. SIG's current activities cover packaging development, material production, filling-system manufacture, equipment operation, maintenance, and customer support. The group operates through a broad international network with manufacturing and commercial activities in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, North America, and South America. Its sustainability agenda includes aluminum-layer-free aseptic formats, renewable materials, recycling initiatives, and foundation-backed programs such as Cartons for Good and Recycle for Good. The historic Rhine Falls site is owned by the SIG Charitable Foundation, while the headquarters and a production operation remain there.
