Sieur d'Arques was prosecuted over allegations that wines blended from grape varieties other than Pinot Noir were sold as Pinot Noir to obtain higher prices from E. & J. Gallo Winery. The defendants were convicted, with suspended prison sentences and fines of up to €180,000. The controversy was reported to have damaged the reputation of the Languedoc wine region.
