Al-Mutanabbi Street bombing
A car bomb destroyed Shabandar Café and its library during the violence that followed the 2003 invasion of Iraq. More than one hundred people were killed in the broader attack, including four sons and a grandson of operator Muhammad al-Khashali. The café was later rebuilt with public and private support.
