    The Friedrichshof jewelry theft

During the postwar American occupation, members of the officers’ club operating in Friedrichshof discovered and stole jewels hidden by the House of Hesse. The collection was taken out of Germany and many pieces were dismantled for sale. The theft was uncovered in early 1946, leading to criminal proceedings and convictions in 1951. Only about ten percent of the stolen material was recovered.
