Sanlu melamine infant-formula scandal
Infant formula sold under the Sanlu brand was adulterated with melamine, a chemical that can cause kidney stones and renal complications. National testing found all 11 tested Sanlu samples contaminated, with the highest reported level at 2,563 parts per million. The wider crisis affected approximately 294,000 infants and was associated with six deaths. Sanlu apologized, halted production and recalled products, but the company entered bankruptcy proceedings and its senior executives were prosecuted.
