Coconut-levy funds and acquisition of corporate control

Eduardo Cojuangco Jr.'s acquisition of effective control of San Miguel was associated with funds derived from coconut levies imposed during the Marcos administration. Philippine courts and government proceedings later addressed whether assets acquired using those funds were public property or should benefit coconut farmers. The issue became one of the defining controversies in the corporation's ownership history.
