Exhumation and display of Truganini’s remains

After Truganini’s death, members of the Royal Society of Tasmania exhumed her skeleton despite her request that her remains be treated respectfully and her ashes scattered in the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. The skeleton was later displayed. The episode reflects nineteenth-century colonial scientific practices involving the collection and examination of Aboriginal remains and is now regarded as a serious violation of Indigenous dignity, consent and cultural rights.
