Deforestation and peatland controversy
APRIL and related RGE businesses faced sustained criticism from Greenpeace, WWF, the Rainforest Action Network, and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development over alleged rainforest clearing, peatland conversion, and the establishment of acacia plantations for pulp production. RGE and APRIL subsequently announced stronger forestry and supply-chain commitments.
2012
Asian Agri tax case
Asian Agri was investigated over alleged tax evasion relating to the 2002–2005 period. The company denied the allegations. Indonesia’s Supreme Court ordered payment of back taxes and fines, and the company later paid the assessed amounts while indicating that it would seek further judicial review.
Deutsche Bank share-pledge litigation
Beckett Pte Ltd, indirectly partly owned by Sukanto Tanoto, brought legal claims concerning Deutsche Bank’s handling and sale of pledged shares connected with Indonesian companies. Singapore’s High Court found in favor of Deutsche Bank, while also stating that the bank had not fully discharged its duties as pledgee in the share sale.
