Corporate insolvency following Waterford Wedgwood collapse

Rosenthal AG became insolvent after the financial collapse of its majority owner, Waterford Wedgwood. The German company entered formal insolvency proceedings, while its United States business filed for Chapter 7 liquidation. The crisis resulted in a sale of the operating business to Sambonet Paderno Industrie.

  2. 1941

Continuation of the Rosenthal name under Nazi rule

A 1941 decree sought to eliminate Jewish company and brand names. Rosenthal’s management intervened with Joseph Goebbels to retain the Rosenthal name, reportedly because the brand’s international business made its continued use valuable. The episode illustrates the tension between Nazi racial policy, corporate opportunism and the commercial value of the founder’s name.

  3. 1934

Forced exclusion of founder Philipp Rosenthal during the Nazi period

Philipp Rosenthal was forced to withdraw from the company because of his Jewish ancestry, despite being Catholic. Company management and authorities took steps to restrict his voting rights and remove the family’s influence from corporate governance. The episode forms part of the history of Aryanization and the expropriation of Jewish-owned businesses under National Socialism.
