STAP-cell research controversy
RIKEN was at the center of an international controversy after papers describing stimulus-triggered acquisition of pluripotency were challenged over data and image issues. Institutional investigations followed, the papers were retracted, and the episode raised questions about research supervision, verification and scientific integrity. Yoshiki Sasai, a senior scientist involved in the work, later died by suicide.
