Workplace discrimination and pay-disparity controversy
In June 2020, Black employees, women of color, and freelancers used social media to describe discrimination, exclusion, toxic workplace conditions, and disparities in pay. Co-founders Justin Stefano and Philippe von Borries acknowledged leadership failures and said that their privilege had obscured the problems. Global editor-in-chief and co-founder Christene Barberich stepped aside and later left the company.
