Lac-Mégantic derailment and corporate response
The derailment and subsequent fire involving a Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway freight train in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, killed 47 people or left them presumed dead. Rail World's affiliated railway faced criticism over its safety record, operating practices, response to residents, and insurance arrangements. Edward Burkhardt's visit to the town was met with public anger, and the railway later entered bankruptcy proceedings.
