History
RAG Austria began in 1935 as Rohöl-Gewinnungs AG, an exploration company founded by Socony-Vacuum Oil and N.V. de Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij. Its initial concession strategy concentrated on the Vienna Basin, where the company secured extensive exploration rights. A major discovery was made in 1937 with the RAG II well near Zistersdorf, followed by the development of the Gaiselberg oil field in 1938. The discoveries helped establish the Vienna Basin as a significant Austrian oil-producing region. The company's early history was shaped by political upheaval. During the period of Nazi German rule after the Anschluss, RAG was treated as enemy property and administered by a German asset manager. During the Soviet occupation of eastern Austria from 1945 to 1955, drilling equipment was removed as war reparations and production was transferred to the Soviet petroleum administration. RAG's operating rights in the Vienna Basin were consequently restricted. After the Austrian State Treaty and the end of occupation, the company resumed exploration and began to broaden its regional focus. RAG had already received exploration assignments in Upper Austria in 1948 and 1951. In May 1956, it made a major oil discovery near Puchkirchen, one of the company's first important discoveries outside the Vienna Basin. Further exploration identified an oil field near Ried im Innkreis in 1959 and the Voitsdorf field in 1962. Voitsdorf became one of Austria's most productive oil fields outside the Vienna Basin and was developed through dozens of wells. Other Upper Austrian fields, including Eberstalzell, Engenfeld, Oberaustall, Sattledt, and Steinhaus, were developed during the following decades. RAG reached its historical peak in crude-oil production in 1968, when annual output exceeded 419,000 tonnes. Oil production later declined, although further discoveries and higher oil prices supported renewed development in the 2000s. By the early 2010s, the company had developed approximately 50 oil and gas fields in Austria. Natural gas assumed greater importance from the 1970s, when RAG discovered numerous medium-sized and smaller reservoirs in Upper Austria. The Haidach gas reservoir, discovered in 1997, was among Austria's largest gas discoveries. The conversion of depleted gas fields into underground storage sites became the company's defining strategic development. RAG began using former natural-gas reservoirs for storage in 1982. The Puchkirchen field was progressively converted, and the first commercial large-scale storage facility began operation in 1995. The associated Haag facilities expanded the system's capacity. RAG then developed Haidach in cooperation with Gazprom Export and Wingas; the facility entered operation in 2007 and was expanded in 2011. The 7Fields project, developed with Uniper's predecessor E.ON Gas Storage, added further reservoirs near Salzburg and Upper Austria. RAG served as planner, builder, and technical operator, while marketing involved the project partners. The company's more recent strategy has been to apply its underground-storage expertise to renewable and low-carbon gases. In 2018, the former Rohöl-Aufsuchungs AG business was divided between RAG Austria AG and RAG Exploration & Production GmbH. RAG Austria retained gas storage, gas supply and trading, gas-fuel activities, and research into new energy technologies. It also continued work on geothermal energy and on the storage and production of renewable gas. The Underground Sun Storage project demonstrated the feasibility of storing renewable hydrogen in a natural gas reservoir. Its successor, Underground Sun Conversion, investigates underground biological conversion of hydrogen and carbon dioxide into renewable methane. A test facility at Pilsbach in Upper Austria injected the gases into a reservoir more than 1,000 metres underground, where naturally occurring microorganisms were intended to support methane formation. The program was designed to use geological formations as large-scale, seasonal storage for energy generated from wind and solar power. RAG therefore presents itself not only as a conventional gas operator but also as an infrastructure company preparing subsurface storage for a more decarbonized energy system.
