2003
Allergy and adverse-reaction controversy
Critics claimed that Quorn caused allergic reactions and cited reported cases including an asthma attack associated with consumption. Marlow Foods disputed the incidence estimates, while food-safety representatives acknowledged that allergy was possible but argued that adverse reactions were uncommon compared with several other foods and ingredients.
2002
Dispute over mushroom-based labeling
The Center for Science in the Public Interest, the American Mushroom Institute and rival Gardenburger challenged descriptions presenting Quorn as mushroom-based. Their concern was that consumers might not understand that the product used Fusarium venenatum, a microfungus rather than a conventional mushroom. The United Kingdom Advertising Standards Authority considered the wording misleading and required clearer communication about the fungal origin.
2000
Use of battery eggs
Vegetarian groups criticized the use of battery eggs in some Quorn products because of animal-welfare concerns. Marlow Foods worked with the Vegetarian Society to phase out battery eggs and completed the United Kingdom transition by 2004.
