    Proposed Ethos Capital acquisition

The proposed sale of PIR by the Internet Society to private-equity firm Ethos Capital generated substantial opposition from nonprofit groups, internet-governance participants, and public officials. Critics feared that a private owner could raise prices, reduce accountability, or weaken the public-interest commitments associated with .ORG. The transaction was ultimately rejected by ICANN in 2020.
