War Is Beautiful copyright and billing dispute

PowerHouse published David Shields's War Is Beautiful, a book arguing that The New York Times presented the visual imagery of armed conflict in a glamorizing manner. Although the photographs were licensed, the newspaper sought an additional payment for a back-cover panel containing thumbnail images. PowerHouse declined the invoice and defended the publication, while the dispute developed into litigation involving the publisher, The New York Times, and Shields. The controversy concerned copyright, contractual payment, editorial independence, and proposed disclaimers.
