Overview
Post Holdings, Inc. is an American consumer packaged goods holding company headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. Its portfolio spans center-of-the-store grocery products, refrigerated retail foods, foodservice products, food ingredients, and private-label consumer goods. The company is best known through Post Consumer Brands, whose portfolio includes breakfast cereals such as Honey Bunches of Oats, Pebbles, Grape-Nuts, Great Grains, Raisin Bran, Shredded Wheat, Honeycomb, and products associated with the former MOM Brands business, including Malt-O-Meal. The company also owns or operates businesses serving institutional and commercial customers, particularly through Michael Foods and related egg, potato, dairy, and prepared-food operations. The company’s modern development has been driven largely by acquisitions and portfolio restructuring. Its historical connection to the Post name reaches back to C. W. Post’s Postum Cereals business, established in Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1895. That predecessor introduced Postum, a roasted cereal-based beverage, before expanding into breakfast cereals. The current Post Holdings organization, however, is a diversified holding-company structure rather than a single cereal manufacturer. It has expanded beyond branded cereal through purchases of organic and natural-food companies, protein and active-nutrition brands, pasta and nut products, refrigerated side dishes, egg processors, and international cereal businesses. Major additions included Attune Foods, Hearthside’s branded and private-label cereal and snack business, Premier Nutrition, Dakota Growers Pasta, Golden Boy Foods, Dymatize, Michael Foods, MOM Brands, Weetabix, Bob Evans Farms, Henningsen Foods, Almark Foods, and selected brands and businesses acquired from Conagra Brands, TreeHouse Foods, Nestlé, and other owners. These transactions gave Post exposure to both consumer retail and business-to-business channels. Michael Foods supplies value-added egg products and related foodservice and ingredient solutions, while Post Refrigerated Retail markets refrigerated potato, egg, sausage, cheese, and prepared side-dish products under brands including Bob Evans, Simply Potatoes, Crystal Farms, Egg Beaters, and Better’n Eggs. Post has also used separation and partnership transactions to reshape its portfolio. In 2018 it placed its private-label business into 8th Avenue Food & Provisions alongside Thomas H. Lee Partners. Its active-nutrition business, including Premier Protein, Dymatize, and PowerBar, was separated into BellRing Brands, which later became an independently traded public company. Post completed the distribution of most of its BellRing interest in 2022 and subsequently divested its remaining interest. The company’s present strategy is built around a house-of-brands and operating-company model. Rather than relying on one flagship product, Post combines established grocery brands, private-label manufacturing, refrigerated foods, foodservice supply, and ingredients. Its businesses therefore reach supermarkets, mass merchants, club stores, convenience channels, restaurants, institutions, food manufacturers, and other commercial customers. The group remains active, although the exact composition of its portfolio changes through acquisitions, divestitures, spin-offs, and brand-level transactions.
History
The Post name originated with C. W. Post, who established Postum Cereals in Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1895. The company initially sold Postum, a caffeine-free roasted cereal beverage made from ingredients including wheat grain, bran, and molasses. It later developed a substantial breakfast-cereal business, establishing the historical foundation for the Post cereal identity. The modern Post Holdings organization developed as a diversified food holding company rather than remaining limited to cereal. Beginning in the early 2010s, it pursued an acquisition-led expansion into natural and organic foods, protein nutrition, pasta, nuts, refrigerated foods, eggs, foodservice, and international breakfast products. Attune Foods and the branded and private-label cereal and snack assets acquired from Hearthside expanded its cereal and natural-food platform. Premier Nutrition and Dymatize added protein beverages, powders, bars, and supplements, while Dakota Growers Pasta and Golden Boy Foods broadened the group into pasta, nut butters, dried fruit, and snacks. Michael Foods became a particularly important expansion into business-to-business food supply. Its operations include value-added egg products, refrigerated potatoes, cheese, and foodservice solutions. Post subsequently added Willamette Egg Farms, Henningsen Foods, and Almark Foods, increasing its presence in egg production, processing, hard-cooked eggs, and prepared egg products. The 2015 acquisition of MOM Brands strengthened the company’s domestic cereal position and added the Malt-O-Meal portfolio. In 2017, the purchase of Weetabix brought major United Kingdom and international cereal brands, including Weetabix, Alpen, and Ready Brek. The 2018 purchase of Bob Evans Farms added refrigerated side dishes, sausage, and convenience foods. Post also reorganized parts of its portfolio. In 2018, it created 8th Avenue Food & Provisions with Thomas H. Lee Partners to hold private-label food operations. In 2019, its active-nutrition business was placed into BellRing Brands. Post completed the distribution of 80.1 percent of its BellRing interest in 2022 and later sold the balance, leaving the parent more concentrated in cereal, refrigerated foods, foodservice, and ingredients. Further transactions added Peter Pan peanut butter, Egg Beaters, Ronzoni, and TreeHouse Foods’ ready-to-eat cereal business. The resulting company operates through a collection of specialized businesses and brand platforms, serving both household grocery demand and commercial customers such as restaurants, institutions, food manufacturers, and foodservice distributors. Its model emphasizes portfolio management: acquiring established brands and manufacturing capabilities, integrating related operations, separating businesses when appropriate, and maintaining a mixture of branded, private-label, retail, foodservice, and ingredient revenues.
