The Pop Rocks and soda explosion hoax

A widely circulated urban legend claimed that eating Pop Rocks while drinking a carbonated beverage would cause the stomach to boil or explode. The rumor was false and was reinforced by an invented story about Life cereal actor John Gilchrist. Despite safety testing and public denials, the controversy damaged consumer confidence and contributed to the product’s withdrawal from the market.
