Sharpstown scandal and the mall’s associated bank
Sharpstown State Bank, an original component of the development, later closed in the aftermath of the Sharpstown scandal. The controversy involved developer Frank Sharp, banking interests, and members of the Texas Legislature. The mall was not itself accused of wrongdoing, but its original development and bank were part of the historical setting.
