Eminent-domain and blight controversy
Homeowners and other critics argued that eminent domain was being used to clear properties for private redevelopment even though the homes were not blighted. The dispute generated sustained opposition from holdout residents and negative publicity for Long Branch’s redevelopment effort. A 2010 state ruling found that the downtown area was not blighted for the relevant redevelopment purpose.
