World of Primates building fire
A fire on December 24, 1995, killed 23 endangered primates through smoke inhalation. The building did not have fire-detection equipment, and contemporary coverage of the incident identified limited detection coverage across the zoo. Philadelphia Zoo responded by installing detection equipment in every animal building within the following ten months.
