Controversy over proposed SME acquisition
The proposed takeover of the Slovak newspaper SME prompted resignations by the publisher, editor-in-chief and many editorial employees. They cited concerns over journalistic freedom, ownership influence and the loss of reader confidence.

Gorilla affair
Penta and Jaroslav Haščák were linked to Slovakia's Gorilla affair after the publication of alleged intelligence recordings concerning business and political deal-making. Penta denied the allegations and argued that the file was fabricated. Slovakia's Constitutional Court ruled in 2012 that the relevant intelligence-service wiretapping had been unlawful.
