    Expropriation under the underperforming-enterprises law

In November 2011, the Sri Lankan government expropriated Pelwatte Sugar, Sevanagala Sugar Industries, and their subsidiaries under the Revival of Underperforming Enterprises and Underutilized Assets Act. The action was controversial because private investors disputed the government's ownership position. Distilleries Company of Sri Lanka maintained that it was the lawful owner and sought compensation for its losses.
