"oneLiner": "A Japanese global technology brand spanning consumer electronics, appliances, batteries, automotive systems, and industrial solutions.\n\nNational was a historic Japanese consumer and industrial-appliance brand used by Matsushita Electric Industrial and later Panasonic Corporation.\n\nJapanese multinational electronics corporation 1935-2008, later renamed Panasonic Corporation.",
"summary": "Panasonic is a Japanese technology brand whose origins date to 1918, when Kōnosuke Matsushita established a small electrical-products business in Osaka. It initially made duplex lamp sockets and then expanded into lamps, bicycle lighting, radios, appliances, audio equipment, televisions, cameras, computers, batteries, and industrial systems. The enterprise was incorporated as Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. in 1935 and developed a large manufacturing and distribution network in Japan and overseas.\n\nThe brand’s international identity evolved over several decades. Matsushita used National for many Japanese and international products, while Panasonic was introduced for overseas audio products in the 1950s because the National name was unavailable in some markets. Panasonic later became the group’s principal worldwide consumer-facing name. The company also maintained specialist brands, most notably Technics for high-fidelity audio, and for a period operated or acquired businesses associated with Quasar, Sanyo, and other names. In 2003 it announced Panasonic as its global brand and adopted the “ideas for life” positioning; in 2008 the corporate name changed from Matsushita Electric Industrial to Panasonic Corporation. The National name was subsequently phased out on most products.\n\nPanasonic became one of the world’s largest consumer-electronics manufacturers during the second half of the twentieth century. Its product history includes black-and-white and color televisions, refrigerators, rice cookers, microwave ovens, air-conditioning equipment, video recorders, stereo systems, turntables, portable computers, digital cameras, and televisions sold under the VIERA name. Technics audio products and Lumix digital cameras became important specialist offerings. Panasonic also participated in major technology transitions, including VHS video, plasma television, optical media, digital imaging, rechargeable batteries, and lithium-ion automotive cells.\n\nThe company broadened beyond household electronics through businesses in batteries, automotive components, avionics, factory automation, building systems, housing and renovation, security, and professional imaging. It acquired Sanyo in 2009, strengthening its battery and appliance capabilities, although subsequent restructuring reduced or transferred some businesses. Panasonic exited several unprofitable consumer categories, including plasma televisions and much of its traditional television manufacturing, while increasing its emphasis on business-to-business systems and energy technology.\n\nIn April 2022, the former Panasonic Corporation became Panasonic Holdings Corporation, and operating divisions were reorganized into subsidiaries. The Panasonic Corporation name was retained by the Lifestyle Updates business, while the broader group adopted a holding-company structure. Panasonic remains an active international brand, with consumer products sold alongside professional, industrial, automotive, and energy solutions. Its current public positioning is expressed through the “A Better Life, A Better World” tagline.\n\nNational was a Japanese electronics and appliance brand created by the electric company founded by Konosuke Matsushita, the business that later became Panasonic Corporation. The name was chosen for Matsushita's battery-powered bicycle lamps, reflecting the ambition that the products would become useful throughout Japan. It subsequently became one of the earliest widely recognized Japanese electronics brands and was closely associated with Matsushita's domestic-market identity.\n\nFor much of the twentieth century, National served as Matsushita's principal consumer brand in Japan. Its portfolio covered household appliances, personal appliances, audio and video equipment, lighting-related products, kitchen equipment, and selected industrial appliances. In Asian markets the name became particularly associated with practical, durable domestic products, including rice cookers and other kitchen appliances. National bicycles were also sold internationally, including in the United States under the Panasonic name rather than National.\n\nThe brand's role changed as Matsushita built global recognition for Panasonic. After Panasonic's international expansion, audiovisual products were increasingly sold under Panasonic and Technics. The National name was discontinued for audiovisual products in Europe after 1980 and in Australia and New Zealand after 1988. In Japan, the National and Panasonic names were combined in the form National Panasonic in 1988, although National continued to identify many non-audiovisual products for a longer period because of its strong domestic recognition.\n\nMatsushita did not officially use National in the United States because the name was already associated there with National Cash Register. A limited appearance of National-branded rice cookers, meat grinders, and other small kitchen appliances occurred in the United States in 2003, including products imported for Asian-American markets. Across Asia, however, the brand remained visible until Panasonic began a broader unification strategy. National products were gradually rebranded as Panasonic from 2004, making the transition particularly significant in the brand's remaining Asian markets.\n\nThe final stage of the transition occurred in Japan. On October 1, 2008, Matsushita Electric Industrial changed its corporate name to Panasonic Corporation and moved remaining National-branded non-audiovisual products, mainly household appliances and white goods, into the Panasonic brand. National is therefore no longer an active standalone consumer brand, but it remains historically important in Japan and Asia as the predecessor identity behind a large part of Panasonic's appliance business. Its legacy also includes distinctive marketing such as the National Kid television series, celebrity advertising with ABBA and Pink Lady, and a well-known Japanese television campaign featuring the cat Chatran, also known as Milo.\n\nMatsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. was a Japanese multinational electronics corporation founded in 1935 and headquartered in Osaka. In 2008, it was renamed Panasonic Corporation.",

The company said a sealing defect at the connection of the automatic detergent dispensing device may let detergent leak outside the tub; if it drips onto internal wiring, insulation could degrade, potentially causing local short circuits, overheating, smoke or fire. Six related incidents have been reported in Japan and one in Taiwan, with no injuries. Panasonic urged users to stop using the auto-dispensing function until repair, Taiwan Panasonic will provide free on-site inspection and parts replacement via a hotline and online registration, and the head of Panasonic's quality control center publicly apologized.",

"history": "Panasonic began in 1918 as Matsushita Electric Housewares Manufacturing Works in Osaka. Founded by Kōnosuke Matsushita, the business first supplied duplex lamp sockets and gradually developed a reputation for practical electrical goods. During the 1920s it introduced regular product lines, including bicycle lamps marketed under the National name from 1927. The company expanded its manufacturing base and product range through radios, household appliances, motors, lighting equipment, and other electrical components.\n\nThe Second World War brought production of electrical equipment for wartime requirements, while the postwar period created strong demand for radios, bicycles, appliances, and consumer durables. The enterprise was reorganized after the occupation-era dissolution of large industrial groups and eventually rebuilt as Matsushita Electric Industrial. It introduced black-and-white televisions in 1952, refrigerators and blenders in 1953, rice cookers in 1959, and color televisions and microwave ovens during the 1960s. Overseas expansion accelerated, including a Malaysian factory established in 1972.\n\nPanasonic’s international brand emerged from the limitations of National, which was unavailable in some territories. The PanaSonic name was first used for overseas audio products in 1955 and was later standardized as Panasonic. The company expanded the name in the United States in the 1960s and Europe in the 1970s. In parallel, it created Technics in 1965 for high-fidelity audio. Technics turntables, receivers, and related products established a specialist reputation among music enthusiasts. Matsushita also developed air-conditioning compressors, chillers, televisions, video products, computers, and other electronics.\n\nThe company strengthened its North American position in 1974 by acquiring Motorola’s Quasar television business and associated facilities. It launched Panasonic-branded IBM-compatible and portable computers in the 1980s, used the Panasoft label for MSX software, and continued to build its consumer-video presence around VHS technology. In 1990 it acquired MCA, a major American media company, in an ambitious attempt to extend its electronics influence into entertainment. Matsushita later sold most of MCA, illustrating the difficulty of integrating a volatile media business with an electronics conglomerate.\n\nDuring the 1990s and early 2000s, Panasonic introduced portable computers, digital imaging products, televisions, appliances, and recording technologies. The company consolidated its brand architecture as Panasonic became more successful internationally. In 2003 it declared Panasonic its global brand and introduced the “Panasonic ideas for life” tagline. The corporate name changed from Matsushita Electric Industrial to Panasonic Corporation in October 2008. National products were progressively replaced or renamed, while Technics continued as a specialist audio identity and was later revived in 2014.\n\nThe 2000s and 2010s brought substantial restructuring. Panasonic ended or reduced CRT and analog-television production, closed selected factories, and withdrew from or transferred businesses that were no longer competitive. It acquired Sanyo in December 2009, expanding its battery and appliance footprint, and later sold or reorganized several Sanyo-derived operations. Television losses led to the shutdown of plasma production and a strategic shift toward higher-value products and business systems. Panasonic also invested in cameras, cloud-based security, professional imaging, building systems, and automotive batteries.\n\nThe battery relationship with Tesla became a major strategic development. Panasonic agreed to participate in Tesla’s U.S. Gigafactory plans and later supplied cells for Tesla vehicles, although the economics and competitive landscape of automotive batteries remained challenging. The group also developed automotive infotainment, cockpit systems, components, and energy-storage technologies.\n\nIn 2022 Panasonic reorganized into Panasonic Holdings Corporation and operating subsidiaries. The former operating corporation became the holding company, while the Lifestyle Updates business retained the Panasonic Corporation name. This structure separated group oversight from operating businesses and reflected the company’s movement away from a single consumer-electronics conglomerate toward a portfolio of consumer, industrial, automotive, energy, and lifestyle operations. The Panasonic brand remains active globally, with a current emphasis on improving everyday life through connected products, professional technologies, energy systems, and durable engineering.\n\nNational originated within the Japanese electrical business established by Konosuke Matsushita. The name was first applied to battery-powered bicycle lamps. Its intended meaning was aspirational: Matsushita wanted the lamps to become products used by people across Japan. From that initial product category, National developed into a broad consumer and industrial brand and became closely identified with Matsushita's domestic business.\n\nDuring the expansion of Japanese electronics, National became the premier label for many Matsushita products in Japan. Its range extended well beyond lamps and included home appliances, personal appliances, audio and video products, kitchen equipment, and industrial appliances. The brand was especially prominent in household goods and became strongly associated with reliable, affordable everyday technology. Rice cookers were among its best-known products in Asian markets. National bicycles also reflected the breadth of the business; some models were imported into the United States under the Panasonic label and were noted for high factory automation, competitive pricing, and unusual technical features such as a Shimano front-freewheel system on one model.\n\nMatsushita's international naming strategy gradually separated National from its global audiovisual business. After the worldwide success of Panasonic, audiovisual products were sold increasingly under Panasonic and Technics. National usage ended in Europe after 1980 and in Australia and New Zealand after 1988. In Japan, the two identities were combined in the National Panasonic name in 1988, while National remained important for non-audiovisual products. The company did not officially use National in the United States because National Cash Register already used the name there, although a small number of National-branded kitchen products appeared in 2003 and National rice cookers reached some Asian-American retail markets through imports.\n\nNational continued to have substantial recognition in Asia, where it was regarded as an established domestic-appliance manufacturer. Panasonic's decision to consolidate its businesses under a single international brand led to a gradual phase-out in Asian markets from 2004. The transition culminated in Japan when Matsushita Electric Industrial adopted the corporate name Panasonic Corporation on October 1, 2008. Remaining National-branded Japanese products, chiefly household appliances and white goods, were moved to the Panasonic brand.\n\nThe brand also had a notable advertising and entertainment history. In 1960, it supported National Kid, a tokusatsu television series co-produced with Toei as a merchandising-oriented promotion. Although the program was not a major success in Japan, it later acquired cult recognition in Brazil. In 1976, ABBA appeared in National advertising broadcast across several European and Asia-Pacific markets. Pink Lady promoted National air conditioners and the Pepper portable transistor radio in Japan in 1978. During the 1980s, a National television campaign used footage associated with Chatran, also known as Milo, from The Adventures of Milo and Otis. These campaigns helped connect the brand with popular culture even as Panasonic became the group's preferred global identity.\n\nPanasonic Holdings originated in the small electrical workshop founded by Konosuke Matsushita in Osaka. The early business made electrical sockets and related products, then expanded into lamps, radios and other affordable electrical goods. Matsushita Electric Industrial was incorporated in 1935, introducing a formal divisional structure and a platform for national and international expansion. The National trademark became strongly associated with Japanese household products, while Panasonic was developed for overseas markets where National was unavailable or unsuitable as a trademark.\n\nAfter the Second World War, the company rebuilt its manufacturing and distribution network and listed its shares in Tokyo and Osaka in 1949. It expanded through radios, televisions, lighting, appliances and audio products. In 1965, the Technics brand was introduced for audio equipment. During the 1970s, the company launched products such as the Maclord VHS video recorders and Palook fluorescent lamps, while RAMSA became associated with professional audio. Panasonic also played a major role in the spread of VHS recording technology.\n\nFrom the 1980s, Panasonic became more prominent as a global consumer-electronics identity. The Panasonic name began appearing more broadly in Japan, including on the FS-A1 MSX2 computer, and audiovisual product categories progressively moved away from National branding. The company continued to operate a wide portfolio spanning televisions, video recorders, audio systems, appliances, components and electrical equipment. In 1990 it acquired MCA, a major American entertainment company, but later reduced and ultimately disposed of that investment.\n\nThe 2000s brought both operational reform and major acquisitions. Panasonic absorbed or reorganized several electronics and information-equipment subsidiaries and acquired control of Sanyo Electric, whose battery and solar businesses were strategically important. Panasonic also acquired Panasonic Electric Works and Sanyo outright in 2011, then integrated Panasonic Electric Works in 2012. These moves broadened the group from consumer electronics into batteries, housing equipment, electrical infrastructure and industrial solutions.\n\nThe legal name changed from Matsushita Electric Industrial to Panasonic Corporation in 2008. During the following decade, Panasonic sold or separated selected operations, including healthcare and semiconductor businesses, while developing automotive systems, energy storage, connected solutions and enterprise technology. The company also established and expanded relationships in electric-vehicle batteries and acquired businesses in professional refrigeration and supply-chain software.\n\nOn 1 April 2022, Panasonic adopted a holding-company structure and became Panasonic Holdings Corporation. The operating activities were divided among specialized companies, allowing the holding company to concentrate on group management, governance, capital allocation and long-term technology development. Panasonic Connect became responsible for professional and enterprise solutions, Panasonic Energy for batteries, Panasonic Industry for components, and Panasonic Automotive Systems for vehicle electronics. Other companies continued activities in appliances, HVAC, housing, electrical works and entertainment products.\n\nThe current group therefore combines a historic consumer brand with a portfolio of industrial and business-to-business operations. Its strategic challenges include improving returns in mature businesses, managing large-scale restructuring, converting battery and software investments into sustainable profits, and deciding which activities should remain within the group. Its continuing identity rests on engineering, manufacturing scale and the promise of improving everyday life, while its growth ambitions increasingly center on electrification, energy management, connected operations and specialized professional systems.",
