Asbestos litigation and product-liability controversy
Shipyard workers filed a class-action lawsuit alleging that Owens Corning and other manufacturers had known about asbestos-containing products. The company was subsequently named in hundreds of thousands of asbestos-related claims, including claims involving illnesses such as mesothelioma. The litigation contributed to major settlements, adverse judgments, and ultimately the company's 2000 Chapter 11 filing.
