Overview
Norli is a Norwegian bookstore chain and the principal consumer-facing brand of Norli Libris AS. The business traces its formation to the combination of stores associated with Lauritzen Bokhandel and the publishing company Aschehoug & Co. around 1999–2000. It initially operated under the name Norli Gruppen AS, was later known as the Lauritzen-Norli Group, and adopted the Norli Group name in 2001. The chain expanded by acquiring existing bookstores and opening new locations, particularly in shopping centres. During its first decade, ownership was divided equally between Aschehoug and the Lauritzen family. The company experienced severe financial difficulty in the late 2000s. A reported loss before tax of NOK 111 million in 2008 placed Norli near collapse, prompting Aschehoug to provide NOK 60 million in new capital. In January 2009, Aschehoug acquired the Lauritzen family's shares and became the sole owner of the Norli Group. A further structural change took place in October 2010, when Aschehoug and NorgesGruppen agreed to combine Norli Group with NorgesGruppen Bok og Papir AS and the Libris bookstore business. The resulting company, Norli Libris AS, was owned 51 percent by Aschehoug and 49 percent by NorgesGruppen. The arrangement retained both Norli and Libris as customer-facing store brands, while placing the businesses under common ownership. Norli Libris directly owns and operates Norli stores, whereas many Libris locations were primarily owned by individual operators. Norli's core business is the retail sale of books in Norwegian and other languages. Its stores serve both general readers and customers seeking broad subject coverage, and the chain also operates a Norwegian online storefront. A central Oslo store has been described as carrying approximately 60,000 different titles, giving it one of the largest book selections in Scandinavia. By 2021, the chain operated approximately 180 stores across Norway. In January 2020, the company decided to consolidate its retail identity under the Norli name. Libris stores were subsequently rebranded as Norli, making Norli the unified brand across the network. The business remains focused on the Norwegian market and is associated with large-format bookstores, broad book selection, and nationwide physical distribution.
History
Norli emerged from the consolidation of bookstore operations connected with Lauritzen Bokhandel and Aschehoug & Co. around 1999–2000. The new business was established as Norli Gruppen AS, with the two founding sides initially holding equal ownership. It was subsequently referred to as the Lauritzen-Norli Group before adopting the Norli Group name in 2001. Arild Lauritzen led the company during its early development. The group pursued growth through a combination of acquisitions and new-store openings. Many of the new locations were placed in shopping centres, helping the chain extend its presence beyond traditional city-centre bookstores. This expansion made Norli one of the larger bookstore networks in Norway, but it also contributed to a difficult financial position. The company recorded a reported loss before tax of NOK 111 million in 2008 and was described as being close to collapse. William Nygaard replaced Arild Lauritzen as chairman in the third quarter of 2008. Aschehoug then injected NOK 60 million in new capital and, in January 2009, acquired the Lauritzen family's remaining shares. Norli Group consequently became wholly owned by Aschehoug. In October 2010, Aschehoug and NorgesGruppen agreed to combine Norli Group with NorgesGruppen Bok og Papir AS and the Libris bookstore business. The transaction created Norli Libris AS, with Aschehoug holding 51 percent and NorgesGruppen holding 49 percent. Norli and Libris continued as separate customer brands for a period, although they were controlled by the same company. The structure differed across the network: Norli Libris directly owned Norli stores, while many Libris stores were operated or owned by individual bookstore proprietors. The business continued to develop a nationwide retail network. Norli stores sell books in Norwegian and other languages, and the chain also maintains an online sales channel. A prominent central Oslo location has been described as offering around 60,000 different titles, placing it among Scandinavia's largest individual book selections. The chain had approximately 180 stores in Norway by 2021. A major branding decision followed on 1 January 2020, when Norli Libris chose Norli as the single brand name for the retail network. Libris locations were progressively rebranded, ending the dual-brand presentation at chain level. Norli therefore became the unified bookstore identity while Norli Libris AS remained the underlying operating company. The brand's documented market remains Norway, where it operates as a large general bookstore chain serving readers through physical stores and online retail.
