Overview
Nippon Sheet Glass Co., Ltd., commonly known as NSG, is a Japanese glass manufacturer headquartered in Tokyo. Founded in 1918, the company began by producing flat glass in Japan with technology licensed from the American Libbey Owens Ford Glass Company. Its early manufacturing process used the Colburn method, which helped establish the company as a domestic producer of sheet glass at a time when Japan was developing its industrial manufacturing base. The company adopted the name Nippon Sheet Glass in 1931. After the Second World War it expanded its operations across Japan and gradually broadened its capabilities beyond basic flat glass. History
Nippon Sheet Glass was established in November 1918 as America Japan Sheet Glass Co., Ltd. The company was headquartered in Osaka and obtained manufacturing technology from the United States' Libbey Owens Ford Glass Company. Its initial production used the Colburn process for flat glass, giving the business an industrial foundation in sheet-glass manufacturing. In January 1931, the company changed its name to Nippon Sheet Glass Co., Ltd. Following the Second World War, it expanded production and operations across Japan as the country's construction, manufacturing, and consumer industries grew. Over time, the company broadened its product and technology base beyond conventional flat glass to include safety glass, technical glass, optical components, and glass-fiber-related materials. A notable domestic expansion occurred in October 1970, when NSG acquired Nippon Safety Glass Co., Ltd. The acquisition strengthened the company's position in safety-related glazing. In 1999, NSG merged with Nippon Glass Fiber Co., Ltd. and Micro Optics Co., Ltd., combining the parent company's activities with glass-fiber and optical capabilities. In April 2001, it acquired Nippon Muki Co., Ltd. The registered head office was transferred from Osaka to Minato Ward in Tokyo in July 2004. In Japan, named offerings have included SPACIA vacuum glazing, SECUO security glass, PAIR REIBORG insulating and solar-control glass, HOME TOUGH LIGHT toughened glass, UMU switchable glass, SELFOC rod lenses and lens arrays, LAMIPANE laminated glass, and THERLITE-T heated automotive glass. The company remains a publicly listed Japanese glass group with international operations under the NSG Group name. Its business combines high-volume architectural and automotive glazing with technical products aimed at specialized industrial and optical applications.
