    Wartime production and forced-labor legacy

Nippon Sharyo-built locomotive C56 31 was used in the opening of the Thai–Burma Railway, whose construction involved extensive forced labor and severe abuses against Allied prisoners of war and other laborers. Historical material also links the Narumi prisoner-of-war camp's forced labor to the company's wartime production. The issue is a historical wartime labor matter rather than a contemporary corporate scandal.
