  1. 2016

    Criticism of youth-oriented experiential marketing

Reporting and research alleged that Newport promotions, pricing, and advertising were concentrated in neighborhoods with larger Black student populations and more children. Newport Pleasure Lounges at music events were cited as an example of marketing that could reach teenagers and young adults.

  2. 2010

    Menthol 10s shoe trademark dispute

Lorillard and Nike sued designer Ari Saal Forman over shoes that combined elements associated with Nike's Air Force 1 and Newport's spinnaker design and color scheme. The dispute resulted in restrictions on Forman's ownership of the shoes.

  3. 1998

    Nicotine-level and youth-smoking concerns

A Massachusetts public-health report cited Newport among cigarettes with comparatively high nicotine levels. Separate research reported a doubling in the proportion of teenage Newport smokers between 1989 and 1996, intensifying criticism of the brand's product and marketing practices.

  4. 1968

    Targeted African-American marketing

Lorillard substantially expanded its African-American marketing budget and promoted Newport in Black communities. Critics and researchers later characterized the strategy as racialized targeting of a population disproportionately exposed to menthol cigarette marketing.

  5. Alleged distribution of free cigarettes to children

A lawsuit alleged that Lorillard vans regularly visited housing projects and distributed free Newport cigarettes to children. Evidence in the case connected the plaintiff's early smoking initiation near a Boston playground with later lung-cancer death. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court upheld $35 million in damages against Lorillard while reversing other damage-related issues.
