Controversy over the dismissal of Governor Octavian Armașu
Armașu was removed after parliamentary criticism related to the recovery of stolen banking-fraud assets and the retention of bank employees accused in the fraud case. The European Commission and IMF subsequently expressed concern that the dismissal process could undermine the perceived independence of the central bank.

Moldovan banking fraud
A coordinated fraud involving three Moldovan banks moved approximately one billion US dollars through shell companies and foreign accounts shortly before the 2014 parliamentary election. An independent investigation commissioned by the BNM found that at least 13.5 billion Moldovan lei had been transferred to companies associated with the Șor group. The episode nearly bankrupted Moldova and generated prolonged scrutiny of bank supervision, beneficial ownership, related-party transactions, and asset recovery.
