Dispute over Tritan endocrine-activity testing
CertiChem and PlastiPure publicized findings suggesting that some plastics, including Tritan, could show estrogenic activity in cell-based testing. Eastman Chemical disputed the conclusions and sued over related claims. A jury ruled in Eastman's favor, and the parties were barred from making specified claims about Tritan's estrogenic activity.

Bisphenol A and polycarbonate bottle controversy
Nalgene's clear polycarbonate outdoor bottles became part of a wider public controversy over whether bisphenol A could leach from plastics and affect the endocrine system. Nalgene said its products were safe when used as directed, but retailers including Mountain Equipment Co-op, Lululemon, and REI removed or replaced affected bottles. The controversy culminated in Nalgene's 2008 decision to phase out BPA-containing Outdoor containers and adopt Tritan copolyester. Subsequent debate also concerned whether BPA-free plastics could exhibit other forms of estrogenic activity.
