Four members of the Palestinian Liberation Front seized the ship on 7 October 1985. The hostage crisis included the killing of Leon Klinghoffer, a disabled Jewish-American passenger, and ended in a diplomatic and legal confrontation involving Egypt, Italy, Syria, the United States, and Yugoslavia.
