Dispute over possible VP8 patent infringement
MPEG LA stated that royalty-free codecs including VP8 could implicate patents held by its licensors and invited parties with potentially essential patents to come forward. Critics objected that the relevant patents were not initially identified. MPEG LA and Google later reached an agreement concerning VP8.

Nero AG antitrust lawsuit
Nero AG sued MPEG LA, alleging that the MPEG-2 patent pool had been improperly expanded with non-essential patents and that royalty charges had been applied inconsistently. The United States District Court for the Central District of California dismissed the case with prejudice on November 29, 2010.
