Legacy pollution of the Queen and King rivers
Decades of mining, milling, smelting, and waste disposal caused severe environmental damage in western Tasmania. Tailings, slag, and acid drainage entered the Queen and King rivers and Macquarie Harbour, eliminating aquatic life in parts of the river system and contaminating waterways with metals. Post-closure studies identified drainage from the mine lease as the dominant source of acid-related pollution.
