Delaware City refinery storage-tank explosion and sulfuric-acid release

On July 17, 2001, a spent-sulfuric-acid storage tank at Motiva’s Delaware City Refinery exploded during hot-work activity. One contract worker died, eight were injured, and approximately 99,000 gallons of sulfuric acid entered the Delaware River. A federal investigation identified failures involving work authorization and the condition of the tank. The incident led to litigation, civil settlements, environmental remediation requirements, and new Delaware storage-tank legislation.
