Mutual-fund market-timing investigation
MFS was investigated by Massachusetts and New Hampshire regulators along with other fund companies during the broad mutual-fund trading inquiry. The SEC alleged that MFS prospectuses made false or misleading statements concerning policies on market trading and market timing. MFS later paid $350 million to settle state and federal fraud charges and adopted reforms involving disclosure, independent fund governance, market-timing deterrence, and the end of soft-dollar arrangements.
