Meiji Step infant-formula cesium recall
Trace cesium-134 and cesium-137 were detected in some 850-gram cans of Meiji Step manufactured after the March 11, 2011 earthquake. Meiji said the readings were below Japan’s provisional regulatory limit for infant products and stated that the product did not pose a health risk. The company nevertheless conducted a voluntary recall of approximately 400,000 cans. The event became a major test of consumer trust, testing disclosure, and risk communication in Japan’s infant-food market.
