Overview
Markforged is an American additive-manufacturing company founded in 2013 by Gregory Mark and David Benhaim. History
Markforged began in 2013 as a startup founded by Gregory Mark and David Benhaim. It presented a working prototype of the Mark One printer at SolidWorks World in San Diego in 2014. The machine was notable for its ability to place continuous carbon fiber inside an extrusion-printed structure, alongside conventional materials such as nylon, fiberglass, and PLA. The technology established the company's initial identity: using fiber reinforcement to make polymer-based printed parts suitable for functional tooling and industrial applications rather than only visual prototypes. In 2015, Markforged introduced Eiger, a cloud-based software environment for preparing and managing print jobs. Markforged later added the larger Sinter-2 furnace and additional materials, including tool steels, Inconel 625, and pure copper. The company experienced rapid venture-backed growth. Funding reported in public reference material included seed and Series A financing, later investments from technology and industrial investors, and an $82 million Series D round led by Summit Partners in 2019. In that same year, Shai Terem joined Markforged as president and chief operating officer. In early 2020, Markforged reported ISO/IEC 27001 certification covering its hardware-related information-security processes and Eiger cloud and fleet-management software. The COVID-19 pandemic provided a prominent example of the company's distributed-manufacturing model. Markforged reported helping produce more than 6,000 face shields during the first three months of the pandemic. It also worked with Neurophotometrics on Fiberflex Rayon, a 3D-printed nasopharyngeal swab. The project, later called Swab56, reportedly evaluated dozens of prototypes in a short development cycle before selecting a final design. In October 2020, Terem was promoted to chief executive officer and president, while Gregory Mark moved into a chairman role. Markforged also announced The Digital Forge, describing it as an industrial additive-manufacturing platform integrating printers, materials, software, cloud connectivity, and artificial-intelligence-related capabilities. The company subsequently entered public markets in 2021 under the ticker MKFG through a special-purpose acquisition transaction. Markforged announced plans in 2021 to move its corporate headquarters within Waltham, Massachusetts, to accommodate growth; the new facility was operational by early 2023.
