    Ajka red mud disaster

On 4 October 2010, a retaining dam at a red mud pond connected to MAL's Ajka alumina factory failed. Approximately 600,000 to 700,000 cubic metres of highly alkaline and corrosive residue escaped and reached nearby communities, including Kolontár and Devecser. At least ten people died and about 150 were injured. The disaster led to government nationalization of MAL and ultimately preceded the company's liquidation.
