Taipa Line sees 18 cable failures in two years, full suspension for over five months; audit reveals test report 'switch'
The Macau Light Rapid Transit Taipa Line, costing MOP 11 billion, opened in December 2019; in less than two years it had 18 cable failures, and from October 2021 the entire line was suspended for more than five months to replace cables. A 2023 Audit Commission report found the cables were below national and IEC standards, and the type test report submitted by the supplier did not match the cables actually purchased; the Transport Infrastructure Office knew this but still accepted them. The Audit Commission criticized lapses in management checks.
