Make Love Not Spam distributed-denial-of-service controversy
The anti-spam screensaver was criticized because participating computers collectively sent traffic to targeted websites in a way that security experts compared with a botnet or distributed denial-of-service operation. Although users knowingly opted in, the technical and ethical implications generated substantial negative attention. Lycos Europe ended the program after several weeks and reportedly faced counterattacks believed to be connected with spam operators.
