Connections to slavery and the transatlantic slave trade
Historical accounts identify Lloyd's Coffee House as a location to which advertisements for runaway enslaved people directed their return. The insurance market that developed from the Lloyd's milieu also became involved in insuring slave ships and enslaved people. These associations are a significant and contested part of the coffee house's legacy.
