History
Lincoln Electric began in 1895 when John C. Lincoln invested $200 in a business making electric motors that he had designed. The company was initially based in the Cleveland area and later became headquartered in Euclid, Ohio. Its early transformation came from electric arc welding, which offered an alternative to riveting steel structures. By enabling more rigid and potentially lower-cost joints, welding supported the construction of larger buildings, bridges, ships, pipelines, and industrial machinery. John’s brother James Finney Lincoln joined the business in 1907 after an illness and initially sold machines made in the company’s shop.
