Overview
Kim Chong-t'ae Electric Locomotive Works is a state-owned North Korean railway-equipment manufacturer based in Sosong District, P'yŏngyang. It is subordinate to the North Korean Ministry of Railways and is generally described as the country's largest facility for railway manufacturing and repair. The plant's output has included electric and diesel locomotives, passenger cars, multiple-unit trainsets, subway vehicles, trams, and equipment for narrow-gauge railways. History
Kim Chong-t'ae Electric Locomotive Works began as a railway rolling-stock repair facility established during the Japanese occupation of Korea. Following liberation, it was reorganized on 10 November 1945 as the West P'yŏngyang Railway Factory. Its initial role centered on repairing locomotives and freight and passenger cars for the emerging North Korean railway system. The works expanded beyond repair during the late 1950s, with Polish assistance supporting the creation of facilities for electric-locomotive production.
