Wyandotte County Unified Government sues Kansas over Chiefs stadium legislation

    Lawsuit filed

On Friday, October 9, 2026, the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas filed a lawsuit against the state of Kansas over House Bill 2466, the legislation enabling the proposed Kansas City Chiefs stadium in Wyandotte County. The Unified Government contends the law removes local powers to tax, zone and plan, set and collect local fees, and provide utility service for the project, and excludes local citizens from the process. Mayor Christal Watson said the litigation seeks a constitutional and equitable process for building the proposed stadium.

Stated objective. To ensure a constitutional and equitable process for building the proposed stadium in Wyandotte County

    Source excerpt

    • Today, the Unified Government has pursued litigation against the State of Kansas to ensure a constitutional and equitable process for building the proposed stadium in Wyandotte County.
    • House Bill 2466 does more than invite a stadium to Wyandotte County. For one project, in one community, it removes the local government's power to tax, to zone and plan, to set and collect local fees, and to provide utility service through the community's own publicly-owned utility.
